Smart Fortwo | But Not Forthree Or Forfour

Just this morning, I encountered my first smart fortwo. It was parked behind my Toyota Yaris in front of the Los Angeles coffee shop I frequent. My first thought was a wish that I’d gotten one of these economical and forward thinking cars instead of a Toyota Yaris, which I purchased last summer after totaling my Prius and realizing I needed to downgrade price-wise. The smart fortwo starts at $11,590, which is half of the Prius’ lot price. I could save money and be driving around looking eco-chic again.

But alas, this is a fortwo. And seeing as how I have two kids, my car needs to be at least a forthree.

Originally out of Hambach, France, the smart fortwo is now offered in 37 countries, with sales beginning in the U.S in January of this year.

I found an analysis between the fortwo passion and my Toyota Yaris S Sedan manual that made me feel a little better. Apparently the Yaris is nearly five seconds faster and out-corners the fortwo. The Yaris S also has twice the cargo space and twice the passenger volume, with the ability to seat up to five passengers.

The fortwo only comes with a 2-year/24,000 mile warranty verses Toyota’s standard 3-year/36,000 mile warranty. But according to Fuel Economy, the average smart fortwo driver reports getting 37.9 mpg, while a Yaris driver averages 37.5 mpg.

This all makes me feel good about driving my Yaris. I might be taking up more parking space and on the road I might appear a less eco-conscious, but the bottom line is, I need the extra passenger space. As for other commuters, if they don’t really need the room, the smart fortwo is a great option.

Despite the fact that it’s only for two people and its light weight (yep, it’s lighter than the Yaris) has been argued to offer less protection in a real-world crash than a heavier vehicle, I hope to continue seeing them at the coffee shop. And elsewhere.
