Soleo | Australian For Sunscreen

Every day a story appears that turns our previously blissfully ignorant lives upside down. Don’t eat regular apples, they’re coated with pesticides. Don’t drink out of BPA plastic bottles, they leach toxic chemicals. Don’t wear conventional cotton tees, they’re often times made on the backs of child labor. Grim, right? Well here’s another one for you. Regular sunscreen? Forget about it. A new study from the Centers for Disease Control reveals that “the bodies of nearly all Americans are contaminated with a sunscreen chemical that has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption and cell damage”. That chemical is oxybenzone and it can be found in 600 sunscreens manufactured and sold in the U.S.
Rather than read like veritable chemical cocktail, Aussie-made Soleo Organics All Natural Sunscreen consists of palatable (and pronounceable!) ingredients, including grapeseed oil, macdamia oil, green tea extract, roman chamomile extract, beeswax and cucumber extract.
Former naturopath and company CTO, Leo Fung, explains the process behind bringing the concept of an organic sunscreen to see the light of day: “Six years of intense research and development which was a very difficult and expensive process”. (Six million dollars to be precise.) Its secret ingredient is a naturally occurring micro-fine zinc oxide, too small to be seen but too large to be absorbed into the skin, which provides 30 SPF+ broad-spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays. “Zinc is by far the safest of any of the ‘approved active ingredients’ for sunscreens and also happens to be an essential nutrient that is used by the body for healthy skin and immune system,” says Fung.
It’s no co-incidence that this chemical- and preservative-free yet highly effective sunscreen originates from Australia. It’s a matter of survival. “Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world…we are put to the extreme test with lots of sunshine, a water focused lifestyle and a massive hole in the ozone layer” says Fung.
So, with a number organic sunscreens hitting the market, what sets Soleo apart? The sustained level of protection, which is tested on their team of professional surfers. (Phew, did it suddenly get hot in here?)
