Starbucks Skinny Platform | Low Fat, Low Sugar, Healthy Brownies

Starbucks has been modifying their menu and their image of high fat, high calorie lattes and sweets to appeal to the calorie obsessed “health” conscience coffee cult. Recently they introduced the contriversally named “Skinny” Menu that includes 90-160 calorie Skinny Mochas and Skinny Lattes, made up of espresso, non-fat milk, and sugar free artificially sweetened syrups. Of course people who are truly conscience about what is healthy and not just obsessed with the number they see on their scale, would more likely skip the Starbucks coffee, dairy and artificial crap all together and opt for an Organic Yerba Matte Latte with Almond Milk and a natural low glycemic sweetener like Xylitol, Agave, or Organic Erythritol.

“We regularly hear from our partners that customers are cutting calories and seeking healthier options,” said Katie Thomson, registered dietitian, Starbucks Coffee Company. “We understand how important overall wellness is to our customers and so we’ve made it easier for them to stick to their New Year’s goals without giving up their daily coffee routine by introducing the Skinny platform.”

But what about the high calorie cakes and brownies that are so tempting to go with your Skinny Soy Mocha on an afternoon Starbucks run. Now, to keep up with the virtuous “skinny” theme, Starbucks has added 1.5 g fat, low sugar, dairy and egg free brownies to their menu for $1.95. I’m not a Starbucks fan or a coffee fan for that matter, so I haven’t tried these. According to some reviewers they are pretty good and they say the chocolate icing tastes like any other rich icing, yet the cake part is a bit on the chewier side. They are not organic, but are obviously a healthier option. Although not low fat or low sugar, the best brownies I’ve ever tried are Khatija’s Organic Espresso Truffle Brownies.
