Stella McCartney | Do Famous Footsteps Make Great Footwear?

What do you get when you mix a pop icon with a celebrity animal activist? If you’re lucky, you get creative force with a firm consciousness. But did Stella McCartney inherit the best of two impressive gene pools?
Following the creation of her first garment at age 12, McCartney’s signature style of sharp tailoring with sexy femininity began to emerge, eventually earning popularity among celebrities, like style icon Kate Moss, and eco-worshipping fashionistas worldwide. In keeping with her lifelong vegetarian lifestyle, Stella’s lines eschew leather and fur. She also has a co-partnership with Adidas and designs her own skincare and fragrance lines, both of which are strictly organic.
But despite a seemingly healthy and responsible set of products, her career has not been without controversy. Though she has designed high-profile getups for the likes of Annie Lennox, Jude Law and BFFs Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, McCartney has been plagued with speculation that her famous surname opened doors that her talent alone couldn’t have.
Meanwhile, her designs have been called everything from “edgy” to “out of order”. Just last month, Stella created a stir by designing a silver necklace with a single-legged charm, which many saw as a direct slam to her father’s estranged amputee wife, Heather Mills. (According to an article in Australia’s Herald Sun, Mills responded to the £300 pendant by calling her former stepdaughter “evil”.)
But are her critics too harsh? After taking flak for installing a 30-foot Patrick Blanc-designed vertical green wall at a recent Paris fashion show, Stella responded that the wall was being donated afterwards to a low-income housing project in Boulogne as a way to help teach street level ecology.
I, personally, think her designs are hot. And so do voters at the prestigious British Fashion Awards, who crowned her Designer of the Year. Whether or not she has the creative staying power of her legendary father is still up in the air.
