Global Warming aka Global Extinction Six

global warming science 03 Global Warming aka Global Extinction Six

We’re all going to die!

According to leading scientists, our world has made minced meat of most of its former tenants. Fossil records indicate mass catastrophic climate change has occurred on Earth five previous times throughout her many revolving days of existence. Climate change that looks a lot like the end of the world. Or at least the end of our world.

Now, some scientists are predicting we are moving aggressively towards Climatic Revolution Number Six. (And no, it’s not on the Beatles White Album.)

That’s right. We’re not just gonna die. We’re going to be consumed. Burned up. Used as fuel for the great space machine.

Relax; it’s not the end of the world. The world will go on turning. It’s the tenants who get forcibly evicted. Extinction style.

Bordeaux | From Reds and Whites to Green

bordeaux 004 Bordeaux | From Reds and Whites to Green

Who knew making wine was such a large factor in global warming? Apparently those in the Bordeaux region did. And luckily for us they’re doing something about it.

Reading this reminded me of the time I realized that leaving home meant losing my allowance. Something I once took for granted was now being turned into something for which I had to become responsible. So of course, I wanted to learn more about this unexpected splash into my glass.

The Greenback Effect & Letting the Market Take Care of Global Warming

russian industry globalwarming The Greenback Effect & Letting the Market Take Care of Global Warming

Growing up in a capitalist society, it’s hard to understand that some countries don’t rely on markets to make economic decisions. The Soviet Union’s collapse was due in a large part to relying on the government to make all the economic decisions. Well that and the fact that the government owned everything, basically making slaves of their population. But giving all the keys to the corporations isn’t the answer either, which has been made very clear lately.

Global Warming Causes Climate Refugees

If you’ve being reading up on global warming’s effect on global conflict (and you should be), you know that seemingly minor temperature changes can have an enormous impact on heating up global tensions. But climate change is not only causing violent conflict over lack of usable land and food, it’s also causing a new type of global refugee to form — the “climate refugee”.

Global warming is causing a rise in sea levels, and according to the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change), sea levels rose between 9 and 20 cm over the last century. As reported by BBC News, scientists predict further increases of 9 to 88 cm by the year 2100. For some of us, this may seem like a minimal height change over a hundred year period, but for coastal regions, this rise could mean the difference between having a home and watching your home flooded with water and washed out to sea.

Global Warming Gives Us Crabs

crabs 0031 Global Warming Gives Us Crabs

The crabs are gearing up for a takeover. Not of humans, thankfully, but of other species in the Antarctic Peninsula. Which could lead to serious consequences.

While crabs and other swift predators were once stymied by the Arctic Ocean’s cold temperatures, millions of years of climate change have heated the waters, giving them an open door to make their way back.

As scientists explain it, crabs aren’t able to handle the high levels of magnesium that build up in their bloodstream while traversing cold water. Too much magnesium in the system causes them to pass out and pass away. On the other hand, those species that aren’t affected by the excessive amounts have been able to travel freely. But as the temperatures warm, crab populations have been able to move into more shallow areas, threatening the lives of such magnesium-immune dwellers as ribbon worms and sea stars.

Raising Deep Water in Ocean Tubes

darkskies 01 Raising Deep Water in Ocean Tubes

Here’s the latest solution from the global war on climate change: giant metal tubes that force cooler water to the surface of the ocean. National Geographic News recently reported a proposal by James Lovelock, a British scientist and the author of the holistic world view known as the Gaia theory, that would sequester CO2 “naturally” by fostering algae growth at the surface of the ocean.

The G8 Nations Of Power Agree Global Warming Is An Issue!

g8 summit police The G8 Nations Of Power Agree Global Warming Is An Issue!

Just incase you missed the massive in-depth up to the second coverage of the G8, we thought we would do a recap. Yes, we know it happened in July, but it seems like no one really noticed, so here it is again.

I suppose we have to look at this year’s G8 summit as somewhat of a success. However porous the language may be, however ineffectual cutting current emissions levels 50% by 2050 ultimately will be, and even though that figure could not be agreed upon by the emerging economies of the world, at least it’s a step in the right direction. At least we have the dirty little secret about carbon polluting out into the worldwide open. Right? Continue Reading / See Additional Photos

Trees and CO2 | The Vicious Cycle

carbon offset forest 03 Trees and CO2 | The Vicious Cycle

We hear all this talk about our planet’s CO2 problem being solved simply by planting trees. Corporations that make and sell electronics and other carbon dioxide-producing goodies have even implemented so-called off-set programs in an effort to make their gadgets seem less harmful. Indulge in guilt-free shopping: buy a computer and we’ll plant a tree somewhere on your behalf. Problem solved.

But a recent Environmental Graffiti article suggests that additional greenery doesn’t solve the problem, it exacerbates it.

Climate Change To Bring About Global Chaos

pentagon Climate Change To Bring About Global Chaos

It sounds like the plot of a terrifying disaster movie. But, according to The Observer, it’s real. And it’s coming.

A classified report unearthed in 2004 suggested that in less than 20 years, global warming will sink major European cities under water and bring about nuclear wars, famine, droughts and global rioting as desperate people search (and fight for) what little food, water and energy remains Continue Reading / See Additional Photos

There’s nothing like reaching the common man through the medium of…opera. Yeah right, all that black tie, high ticket prices and knowledge of Italian makes it a real crowd pleaser.

Well sound idea or not, the Associated Press reports that Italian composer Giorgio Battistelli has been assigned the task of turning Gore’s 2006 hit documentary into a 2011 Milan Opera House, full house. The composer is currently artistic director of Verona’s Arena.

Ecopsychology: Got Nature? | Dealing with Global Warming Anxiety

Here’s one for the pseudoscience file. Psychologists worldwide are increasingly buying in to the idea that a return to nature is the panacea for all of our human problems. Bogus? Well, I’m not a psychologist, but I know that there’s no single answer to our problems as modern humans.

I have worked with hundreds of at-risk teens in the woods and sat in countless meetings with their therapists. What I’ve found is that nature certainly has a place in rehabilitating people — especially teens — who have difficulties managing the crazy lifestyles we lead. What we shouldn’t be doing is diagnosing new diseases based on our lack of connection with nature and working forward with people from there. My favorite new diagnosis is “global warming anxiety”.
