On our menu it’s actually called the Pumpkinseed and Herb Salad, but otherwise referred to by me as my favorite breakfast salad. I wake up craving this salad. And yes, it’s meant to fix me. I started eating this specific green mix because I was told that I probably need more of the sexy mineral zinc in my system, among other things. I haven’t been feeling well (at all) so this salad is part of my healing plan. My books are all about how raw food makes you feel amazing. I used to feel amazing. Why do I now feel like shit? And how can I admit that? (Doing it now). More on the healing plan as soon as I can find more time to write about it. Back to zinc. Pumpkinseeds happen to be very high in zinc. And so my love affair with pumpkinseeds has been rekindled.
Years ago in another (not raw) restaurant, I put a pumpkinseed salad on the menu: lolo rosso and red oak lettuces, shaved bosc pear, shaved pecorino, toasted salted pumpkinseeds and pumpkinseed lemon dressing. While I love delicate fluffy greens like lolo rosso and red oak, what I really can’t get enough of are kale and herbs. I could eat bathtubs of kale.
So, I started making myself this salad at the restaurant. Kale plus a bunch of parsley leaves, cilantro leaves, and torn mint leaves. Add hempseeds (full of omega-3’s… good for so many reasons!). Then toss the whole thing in a dressing made of pumpkinseed oil and lemon juice, and plenty of salt (ideally Himalayan crystal salt). You can also use a mix of olive (or other) oil with the pumpkinseed oil since the flavor is strong, and good quality raw organic pumpkinseed oil happens to be super expensive. (ours comes from Austria, raw and organic). I love maxium pumpkinseed flavor so I use just that oil and lemon (and salt). Top this green pile with a handful of pumpkinseed macadamia parmesan.
Possibly an interesting documentary by our friends over at Café Gratitude. I have to be honest, I say possibly, because I haven’t seen it yet. I have only seen the trailer but the trailer alone made me want to post about it. I love when people turn their lives around and find happiness on the other side. Congratulations to Cary, Ryland, Conor and Gregg for bringing May I be Frank to life.
New York Times: “May I Be Frank,” by Cary Mosier, Ryland Engelhart, Conor Gaffney and Gregg Marks, at S.F. DocFest. This film came about by accident: when Frank Ferrante, a depressed and overweight New Yorker, ate at Café Gratitude, a feel-good vegan and raw food restaurant, he did not imagine the effect that meal would have on his life. But after Mr. Ferrante, a divorced drug addict with hepatitis C, declared to three young male managers at the restaurant that he wanted to fall in love again, they set out to change his life and took a camera along.
Over the course of 42 days, the Café Gratitude workers put Mr. Ferrante through a regimen of wheat grass, colonics and touchy-feely advice. The New Age jargon may put off some viewers, but Mr. Ferrante proves to be a compelling on-screen presence: at once honest and manipulative, hopeful and frustrating.
Lately, I’ve had quite a few flops in the kitchen. Which is why, I was super stoked when I came up with this dish and it actually tasted as good as I hoped.
Since I have issues with purchasing more corn than I (or a family of 5) needs, I wanted to find a way, other than corn relish, to make good use of it. For some reason, corn cakes immediately popped into my head and I decided to roll with it. I had most of the ingredients on hand, so to the kitchen I went…

Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved food, particularly the sweet stuff. I come by it honestly, since my mom’s favorite food is chocolate. I grew up on a pretty “Standard American Diet”. You know, cereal with milk for breakfast, peanut butter (fortunately the natural kind) & jelly sandwiches for lunch, and chicken/veggies/potato for dinner. My favorite treat was ice cream and my mom’s freshly baked chocolate chip cookies!
When I was 14, my mom gave me the book Fit For Life to read, after incorporating some of the principles into her life. I’m not sure what prompted her to give me the book, but I devoured it – and became a vegetarian over night! Not only that, I gave up most dairy products too. Imagine a teenager eliminating 70% of the foods they’ve grown up on?! While everyone else at high school was eating burgers, chocolate bars, soda pop, and ice cream, I was eating my perfectly combined meals most of the time (although I was a candy-aholic on weekends). Fresh fruit for breakfast, fruit/veggies/or homemade soup for lunch, and veggies with either rice, squash, or pasta, for dinner. For a while I just ate fruit – I thought, “why eat anything else when you can eat healthy sweet stuff all the time?” (NOT a great idea as I learned later on). Remember that Sesame Street song “One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong…” Ummmm yeah, I felt like an outcast.
Organic Chocolate Mousse Cake with Raspberry Sauce (raw)
This is one of those staples, every espiring raw foody should learn to make. It just has that perfect balance of a rich deep chocolate taste and the creamy smoothness of the mousse. In this recipe, I make a raspberry sauce, but it’s not required. You could change up the recipe with differnent types of sauces.
Raw food author Natalia Rose lays out a case why even the biggest of the thick header drones amongst us should go a little raw. Her reasoning is, if they don’t they will start to fall apart, period. What does she suggest the drones should start with, juicing of course.
Our friend Brendan Brazier, the vegan tri-athlete, author and formulator of the Vega food products, stopped by to show Sarah and Boise how to make a raw energy bar. This is one of the first products Brendan created during his early days of training.
It’s 4:30 in the morning and I just finished watching a version of the movie 1984 (The Love of Big Brother) by director Michael Radford, which I had never seen. The film, which is based on George Orwells novel 1984, came out ironically enough, in … 1984. I was only 16 at the time, and I somehow missed it. I guess the big brains here in Hollywood, thought this was a nice bit of marketing genius and a scary look backwards at what could have been, if the world had actually gone Red. We would all be living in a world which required us to chant things like “We love big brother” and “Drill Baby Drill”. The population would have also freely given up their personal rights to keep themselves safe from the Axis of Evil in East Asia. And of course we would trust completely in our leader the decider! Good thing that never happened.
I am only bringing this up because for years I have owned both the DVD of the film 1984 and a CD by the Eurythmics called 1984. The CD’s 9 songs are based on the book and have been hardwired in my mind as sort of a personal soundtrack, along with songs by the Clash of course. In all this time, I had no clue why the music was never part of the film. The music in the film is this dull grey sounding stuff which it turns out the director wanted and the financiers didn’t. The company funding the movie turned out to be the Virgin Group and I guess they got their way for the theater release and the director got his way for the DVD. So for all these years, I had no idea a Eurythmics version of the film even existed. Kind of strange, since in the book, the main theme is about not knowing what existed or what will be. The government had total control of all memories, by constantly altering the history of what was. I have always thought that was spooky and a little too close to reality, because who is to say we really know what happened at any given time. Our only knowledge is what we are told. For the most part, we have very little first hand knowledge of any major events in the world that happen during our lives.

Tim VanOrden The Running Raw Project: (RunningRaw.com) The Running Raw Project came into existence on December 25th of 2005. I was at a Christmas party at my friend’s house in Venice, CA. The topic of my recent entrance into the world of running had come up. As I described the changes that were happening to my body and the abnormal feats of endurance that I was capable of, someone said – “you should film this”. That hadn’t occured to me before. Had anyone ever done that? Was anyone documenting the physical changes that occur when one goes raw? Were people testing this diet and it’s relation to physical performance? I looked around online and found not one reference to a Raw diet and athletic performance. This blew my mind. What I was experiencing was off the charts, was I the only one experiencing these physical improvements on this diet? I had to find out. Thus the journey began.

Question What is a Vegan Diet?
Tim: A vegan diet is entirely plant based and void of all animal products – including eggs, fish and dairy (yes, those are animal products).
Question What is a raw vegan diet?
Tim: A raw vegan diet consists entirely of uncooked, unprocessed, whole plant foods. Examples of what a raw “fooder” might eat are; fresh vegetables and salads, fruits and fruit smoothies, and nuts and seeds.
