Tired of June Gloom and the equally gloomy economic situation, I decided I needed a few days away. Ironically, I found myself heading to San Francisco.

After a day of activities- clam chowder in a bread bowl, a trolley to the Pier, and a baseball game on the bay- I had completed the traditional tourist fare. I was searching for an exciting recommendation when I was told about the newly re-opened California Academy of Sciences at Golden Gate Park.

A day indoors wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when given the suggestion, but I soon realized it wasn’t what Architect Renzo Piano had in mind either when he began work on this $500 million, almost ten-year renovation.

San Francisco Bay Spill | Delayed Response Worsens Impact

The most chilling part of what occurred on November 7th in the San Francisco Bay is not so much the accident itself human error is inevitable to a certain degree but the slow response to the accident that, according to an article on abc.com, will result in most of the 58,000 gallons of spilled oil being absorbed into the ecosystem. Shouldn’t previous oil catastrophes (Exxon Valdez, anyone?) have taught us to treat each of these as worst case scenarios? Must we wait for the inevitable before putting into place a real, actionable plan?

While the Coast Guard maintains that their response was immediate 30 minutes after the distress call – they did acknowledge some “miscommunication” with local officials, but said this didn’t interfere with relief efforts. However, the article points out that the much-needed oil-skimming vehicles did not show up until 90 minutes after the call, allowing many more thousands of gallons of oil to do their damage.

San Francisco’s Green Treasure Island Development

San Francisco May Build Green Artificial Island City, on the Existing Treasure Island. One of the largest developers of the United States, Lennar Corporation, proposed to build a self-sustaining city on Treasure Island. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the proposal has 5,500 units of housing in several lowrise buildings, a few high-rise buildings (including a 60-story tower-Treasure Island Tower), restaurants and a ferry terminal facing San Francisco. It also has an organic farm, a wind farm, parkland and tidal marshes.
