Taking A Walk on the Green Side, Saks-Style

Posted By Sarah Backhouse On April 24, 2008 @ 6:30 pm In G Living,Style / Fashion / Beauty | No Comments

One often hears horror stories of green fashion in the bad old days. Tie dyes and hemp tunics, more Haight Ashbury than even Mary-Kate and Ashley. But then came talented, ethically-driven designers who cared about environment, their customer’s health and the working conditions of the people making their clothes. Socially conscious consumers heard the call (and saw the fashions), and here we are today with high-end department stores like Barneys and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying green lines. In the case of the latter, you can find them online at the “Green House — Home of Eco-Smart Style”.

Women’s Apparel has much to ogle over. Regardless of your style, there’s something for every socially conscious fashionista, from Beau Soliel bamboo halter dresses, Lutz & Patmos Peruvian organic cotton boleros and J Brand’s brand spanking new Monroe organic bell bottom jeans to Alabama Chanin organic cotton corsets, Organic’s bright, white and perfect-for-summer wide leg pants and a C&C California slub top.

Accessories feature some gorgeous and not terribly pricey Alex and Ani bangles made from recycled metal sourced from local mills, iwood sunglasses crafted from organic and sustainable macassar ebony and canvas totes by Juicy Couture.

Beauty, however, is surprisingly sparse — consisting of only Louse Galvin’s Sacred Locks Moisturizer and skyn ICELAND eye cream. But with all the fabulous high-end organic beauty products out there, I’m sure it won’t be long until Saks gets up to speed.

Finally, the Men’s Store. The selection is certainly smaller than the women’s (isn’t it always?), but highlights include: Katherine Hamnett Save the World organic cotton tees; Loomstate’s organic cotton military jacket; Edun’s meteor straight-legged jeans; and hemp and organic cotton sneakers by Simple. Not bad for a major department store.

So, there you have it. Plenty of reasons to take a walk down Fifth Avenue and spend some green on green.
