The Adidas Green Experiment

When I was a kid, someone told me Adidas was an anagram for “all day I dream about sex”. I’ve since learned that Adidas was named for its founder Adolf “Adi” Dassler (whose brother Rudolf later created Puma). While I can’t tell you where that anagram rumor began, I can tell you that all day I’ve been dreaming about Adidas Grün, the company’s new line of eco-sneakers set to hit stores in June of this year.

Not many details have been revealed about the range, but I can tell you that Grün means “green” in German. And that (according to Greenloop) the shoes are made from both natural and recycled resources, including organic cotton, gum rubber, rice husks, hemp and recycled PET (aka plastic soda bottles).

One of the styles, the Hoop Mid Grün, is said to be completely biodegradable.

While this is all great on the green front, we can’t ignore the fact that style sells sneakers. And well, what can I say? They took it in a very literal direction. The designs don’t really focus on style as a main objective. They seem much more interested in screaming that they’re made from eco minded materials — none more obviously than my personal favorite, the yellow high top that has the word “recycled” screamingly printed across it.

Regardless, a big thumbs up goes to Adidas for getting into the eco trade. Let’s hope more big corporations take a walk in their shoes.
