The Alight Kitchen Encourages Conscious Consumption

It’s the eve of the Apocalypse. We’re running out of food, clean water and other resources. No, this isn’t the synopsis of a new Hollywood blockbuster, but the premise on which the Turkish designers who call themselves Altera Design Studio based their Alight concept kitchen. At first glance, it looks like a minimalist’s wet dream — modular, monochromatic with strategic splashes of turquoise and steel. But there’s substance behind the style.

The system was developed to minimize waste and encourage conscious consumption. Ready-made food and beverages are served in sheet metal packaging, offering convenience and portion control (imagine that, America!). Adding insult to injury, the cooling unit only stores three days of food — so binge and die. A smart oven warms up the bar-coded food according to groups to enhance efficiency, while the integrated dishwasher conserves water by reusing filtered H2O.

The Alight kitchen was awarded a prize at the Incheon International Design Competition 2007 and will be exhibited at the Incheon International Design Fair in Korea this December.
