The Metamorphosis Collection By Fashion Designer Carol Young

You may think it’s easy for me – shielded away behind my macbook pro — to wax lyrical about being a socially responsible citizen. Sure, I talk the talk. But do I walk the walk? Oh yes, gentle reader, I do. Especially when ethical designer Carol Young’s Los Feliz boutique is literally around the corner from my abode. Not only am I walking the walk, I’m also buying it local, which more than justifies the non-essential purchase of a white moth microfiber cowl neck dress (which I had to get after I was informed by a sales assistant that I resembled “a post-apocalyptic Jacqueline Kennedy”).

A native Angelino, Carol’s initial inspiration came from about far away from the Hollywood starlet scene as one can get. Living in Asia, Carol became intrigued with idea of the “urban nomad” traveling in comfortable, moveable yet individualistic clothing (and with more style than say a German backpacker). A fellowship at Cornell where she experimented in functional design followed after which “undesigned”, Carol’s beautiful, clean, modern line, was born.

Five years and many exalted collections later, Carol has arrived at a point of Metamorphosis. Partly named so because the designer herself gave birth recently to baby Hugo (already earning his keep as undesigned junior model). Inspired by the stripes prevalent in baby clothing, Metamorphosis boasts stripy halters and tunics, some of which can double as stylish maternity wear or in the case of the gorgeous simple wrap cuff, something to protect one’s modesty while breast-feeding. The other way of defining Metamorphosis is by viewing it as “a best of album”. For example, Carol used surplus denim to update her signature c-flip pocket trouser. The beautifully textured organic wing cowl dress has evolved from one of Carol’s very first designs. Added to the chic line-up are: African linens skirts; soy wrap dresses; and the aforementioned polyester microfiber post apocalyptic number happily scrunched up in it’s itty bitty pouch, ready to embark on urban nomadic adventure.
