The Topless Fiat 500

The Fiat all of the Monkies here on staff like so much, just went topless. Yes, the Fiat 500 with its retro details now comes in a convertible soft top. Taking a cue from the Cinquecento of yore, the canvas top slides back to open up a view of the sky yet leaves the outer portion of the roof intact, helping maintain body rigidity. Although the design does appear to limit rearward visibility somewhat, the boot gets to maintain its top-up storage capacity.
Here is what we had to say about the original hard top version:
You know how they say the Golden Globes are usually an indicator of what you can expect at the Academy Awards? Well, if they awarded Oscars for automobiles, I think it would be safe to say the Fiat 500 would be a shoo-in for Best Picture. The Italian car (that’s actually manufactured in Poland) has already won the 2008 European Car of the Year award, the 2008 Auto Europa, the 2007 EuroCarBody, the Auto Trophy and Top Gear magazine’s favorite City Car for 2007.
Most recently, the sexy little retro number was named Best Small Diesel Car by the UK’s “What Diesel Car?” magazine, which seems to mean there’s no stopping the diesel-powered supermini with the Beetle-like rear engine that first premiered in 1957.
Boasting economy, luxury and a chic look, the 500 (or “cinquecento”, as the Italians call it) is powered by Fiat’s revolutionary 1.3 Multijet Turbo Diesel engine and has a top speed of around 100 mph. It’s said to get 56 miles per gallon and can travel 155,000 miles “without needing any maintenance to the mechanical components”. Factor in its great look and it’s not difficult to see why it’s sweeping all the awards this season.
“This award for the Fiat 500 could not come at a better time,” says Edward Butler, General Manager for Fiat Australia (as quoted by infibeam). “It is a clear reminder that the Fiat 500 is not just about style and appearance. It is a car that has a real depth of technical ability, environmental concern and safety. It doesn’t just look great and drive beautifully; it also protects its occupants and, thanks to its low fuel consumption, protects the planet. What more could be wanted from a car for the 21st Century?”
Absolutely nothing. Where do I get one?
