I think it’s official, the idea of green living has seeped into the collective brain of the mainstream consumer. Finally it seems we all understand non-toxic is better, fair trade, equal pay, respect for life, is just a better way to go. Why do I think Green Living is finally being fully excepted? Well for one, every time President Obama goes on TV he says something about a green economy and of course because West Elm (the furniture store) has a section devoted to just greenish products! If that isn’t a sign, I don’t know what is.

West Elm is the stylish but less expensive cousin of Pottery Barn. Both furniture stores are owned by parent company Williams Sonoma. West Elm gave younger shoppers a place to find cool modern clean edge home furnishings at a price they could afford. So, the furniture might not last a lifetime, but it does the job for now. Kind of like a better looking and higher quality IKEA.

I have to admit, even us here at G Living, can’t do everything completely green. We want too, but being a start up our budgets are very thin and we have to make them go a long way. So we balance out how green products we buy are vs cost and practicalness of how it will be used. Example, our camera equipment is not green, but will last for years and enables us to shoot shows. Another big thing for us was the office tables. We needed a lot of them and needed them to look good on camera. Green versions would have been $10,000 to $20,000 k, so instead we bought West Elm dinning tables for a few thousand.

The company started sprouting stores up all across the country a few years ago and in the beginning looked like they would only carry toxic, cheaply made items. But to our surprise here at G Living, each new season of products have been not only better made, but greener in origin. The company has been giving large window and floor space to their greener product lines. Items like, organic bedding, organic cotton pillow, natural jute rugs and sustainable wood for some of their beds and tables.

Now, West Elm is upping their wooing of mainstream buyers online at westelm.com by taking all the green items and giving them their own space. Check out the new West Elm Green, the latest patch of green leaning products that are actually affordable. One last point, the very best thing about West Elm is, (drum roll) if you don’t like the price, just wait, they change weekly and always in the south direction! Checkout the sales page.
