These are some of the hottest peppers globally and can be found in many different forms.

What Are Carolina Reapers?

This famous plant is a hybrid chili pepper of the Capsicum Chinese species, cultivated initially in Winthrop, South Carolina. It was created by crossing a Bhut jolokia with a red habanero. The pepper plant’s fruits average 2.2 million Scoville heat units and peak at around 2.56 million SHU. They are red or orange and often have a bulbous shape.

The peppers typically measure between two and six centimeters (0.8–2.4 in) long and half a centimeter (0.20 in) wide with a rough lumpy texture. These peppers were ranked as the world’s hottest chili pepper by Guinness World Records according to 2012 data, superseding the previous record-holder, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion.

Types of Carolina Peppers

When it comes to Carolina Reaper, there are three main types that you will find. These include the red, orange, and chocolate varieties.

The red ones are the most popular type and have a sweeter taste than the other two varieties. It is also the hottest, measuring in at an average of over one million Scoville heat units.

The orange variety does not score as high in heat units but is still very hot, measuring in at an average of 750,000 Scoville heat units. The chocolate ones are the mildest of the three, only at around 500,000 Scoville heat units on average.

Things to Consider While Buying Carolina Peppers

When you are out to buy peppers, there are certain things that you need to keep in mind. They include:

The Color of the Pepper: This pepper is available in different colors like red, orange, and yellow. Each color has its unique flavor, so pick the one that you think will best suit your taste buds.

The Size of the Pepper: Another thing to consider is the size of the pepper. They can be small, medium, or large. This is, however, a matter of personal choice. Some people prefer smaller peppers because they are easier to eat, while others prefer larger peppers because they have more flesh and are more filling.

The Heat Level: Of course, one of the most important things to consider when buying peppers is the heat level. These peppers range from mild to extremely hot, so be sure to choose the ones you can handle. If you are not sure, it is always better to err on the side of caution and go for the milder peppers.

Now that you know what to look for when buying Carolina peppers, it’s time to head to the store and get some for yourself. Be sure to keep these things in mind, and you will be sure to find the perfect pepper for your needs.
